In the latest commentary for Spotlight, contributor Jaclyn Lindsey, co-founder of kindness.org, argues that breaking down the stigma and isolation felt by many low-income and homeless individuals can help them access critical social services. She says that giving homeless or disconnected people a safe space to interact with others and discuss the challenges they face is a key factor in protecting them from the violence and mental health issues associated with isolation and lack of shelter. Lindsey points to the Living Room project in the United Kingdom -- public spaces designed to foster community and address loneliness among seniors and low-income people -- as an example of this approach.
