Why would you want to give up your Tuesday nights?” That question has been asked of Thrive! volunteers, and the responses have been amazing. Thrive! volunteers include allies, meal donors, youth workers, and guest presenters who share their time and talents freely with people who are working toward financial and relationship stability to be better parents, workers, partners, and community members. The volunteers of Thrive! see how hard Thrive! Leaders (participants) work to set and meet their goals, so most volunteers agree that Tuesday nights at Thrive! are something they really look forward to. It fills their spirit! That volunteer spirit is obvious in people like Larry Brockson, who has been a Thrive! board member for nearly 5 years and has served as an Ally. Volunteers are people like Chris Duran, a Thrive! Ally who shares his skills as a social worker, his experiences as a former member of the military, and his understanding of being a K-State student. Volunteers come from all sectors of our community: Laura volunteers after a busy day managing food service for a school district, Besty comes on Tuesday nights after directing technology functions at the university, Rudy and Kari are a couple who volunteer together, and Mary Anne volunteers each and every Tuesday because she wants to give back to the people who were there for her when she needed help. The people of Thrive! are a community that learns and laughs together on Tuesday nights here in Manhattan. Join us by becoming a Thrive! volunteer. Thrive! has volunteer roles that will fill your spirit. Contact me for more information about being a Thrive! Ally. The next Ally training is February 22 (3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.) – February 23 (9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon) at the First United Methodist Church. —Elaine Johannes, Thrive! Ally Coordinator, [email protected]
